  • What are stinging insects?

Stinging Insects Stinging insects are interesting pests because while we don’t want them living too close to us, we also know they are eco-important and need to be protected. Stinging insects are those pests that have a stinger filled with venom that they use to defend themselves. Bees, wasps, and hornets are common examples of stinging insects.

In our Central Florida service area, two of the most common species of stinging insects are paper wasps and yellow jackets. Both are predatory species whose feeding habits help to control the populations of garden and other nuisance pests. They also help with the pollination of some plants. Paper wasps grow from between five-eighths of an inch and an inch long. They are brown with yellow stripes displayed in a circular pattern. These stinging insects are not nearly as aggressive as the yellow jacket. Yellow jackets have short fuses. They have a black and yellow or black and white color pattern and have a distinctive thin waist.

  • Are stinging insects dangerous?

The most significant danger associated with stinging insects, and the reason most people have a natural fear of these pests, is the venom they possess. Their venom is strong enough to trigger allergic reactions in people. Depending on the person and how allergic they are to the venom, being stung could be life-threatening.

Don’t forget that wasps like yellow jackets and paper wasps have smooth stingers that allow them to sting a target multiple times. With each sting, they inject more and more dangerous venom. Even if you aren’t highly allergic to stinging insect venom, no one wants to be on the receiving end of a sting. Stings from yellow jackets, paper wasps, and other stinging insects are very painful. After being stung, a raised red welt typically develops that could last for hours or days.

  • Why do I have a stinging insect problem?
Stinging insects are attracted to properties for various reasons, including gardens, open trash cans, or compost piles where they can forage for food. They also nest on properties that provide them with ample water sources — bird baths, pools, wading pools, and clogged gutters. Stinging insects are most active during the spring, summer, and fall seasons when the weather is warm, and there is plenty of food to gather and bring back to their colony.
  • Where will I find stinging insects?
Stinging insects, depending on their species, nest in a variety of aerial and ground locations. Take, for instance, yellow jackets; they often nest in the ground under bushes, in the abandoned nests of small animals, under fallen trees, in tree stumps, between rocks, and under decks. Paper wasps, on the other hand, prefer to nest up off of the ground. Their most popular nesting locations include tree branches, dense vegetation, door frames, under roof eaves or underneath decks.

    • Fill in ground holes that could act as nesting sites for aggressive yellow jackets.
    • Maintain garden areas. Remove areas of overgrown vegetation or flowering plants.
    • Remove areas of standing water from your property where stinging insects can drink, such as clogged gutters.
    • Prevent stings by being aware of any stinging insect nest on your property and avoid them.
